I saw this article on AOL today: Career Changers Choose Teaching. The article is about experienced adults going back to school to become teachers and, before I’d even finished reading it, I realized how great an idea that was.
Teaching is a great choice for experienced adults who are looking for a new career or want to change careers. Teaching is all about passing along knowledge—and years of experience means that adults have knowledge to pass on. For experienced adults who already have the skills and knowledge that their current career has given them, there is a great opportunity to make a new career passing that knowledge on to the next generation.
The training an experienced adult already has can quickly be turned into a career in teaching. Experienced adults who are looking for a change can start a career in teaching with little extra education—and even the new education will be in their current field, which they would have a great grounding in already!
Wow, it’s a great idea. Congratulations to all of the experienced adults out there who are ready to teach.

U.S. to Provide $1 Billion to Hire Law Enforcement
We’ve got a good one today. The federal government, courtesy of Vice President Biden, just dropped $1 billion on hiring new Law Enforcement officers in state, local and tribal governments. CNN actually has a full article on this right here. This is great news for anybody who’s been thinking of a career in Law Enforcement because this money is earmarked for new employees.
A billion dollars is a lot of money and, according to CNN, it would entirely pay for 4,699 new positions.
The money is designed to be part of revitalizing the economy and part of bringing new faces into a Criminal Justice system that is ripe and ready for expansion. All indications are that there will be more, similar grants to come.
Law Enforcement is one of the most admirable career paths in the nation and if you’re ready to step on to the path of a police officer, detective, sheriff, crime scene investigator or any one of a dozen other career choices, then this new grant is your chance.

There is No Such Thing as a Useless Degree
Hello to our loyal followers (and everyone else who’s just dropping in). Today, we’ve got some advice for people thinking about a new education and trying to decide what degree is right.
While Business, Computers, Engineering, and Trades are great areas for Degrees with a lot of potential for new graduates, there is one section of education that is often over looked: Liberal Arts. Liberal Arts Degrees are often ignored because there is a perception that the only jobs you can get with a Liberal Arts Degree are in teaching or in getting more school.
This is not true.
There are many opportunities for Liberal Arts Majors in sectors such as: Business, Law Enforcement, Entertainment, and Advertising.
·In Business, the skills of Liberal Arts Degree holders are unique; few people in an office have the communications skills or creativity of a Liberal Arts graduate, and those skills will make you stand out.
·Much of Law Enforcement is actually filling out paperwork. Again, the ability to communicate effectively can make Liberal Arts graduates stand out.
·The Entertainment sector and the Advertising sector are both all about creativity. Liberal Arts Graduates can use their Degree to stand out in both sectors.
The University of Pittsburg just put out this great Career Guide for Liberal Arts Graduates that goes much farther in depth about Liberal Arts opportunities.

The State of the Economy
Welcome back everyone. I got this story off of CNN Money this morning and I knew I had to show it to everyone:
Bernake: Economy Better but…
Essentially, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Ben Bernake, came out today with high hopes for a stabilizing economy and that the economy would start to grow again by the end of the year, which is all great news. Then he finished with a bit of a downer. Even with the economy stabilizing, he expects the numbers of unemployed to stay higher than preferred numbers until 2012.
So, good news and bad news…but. The best way to handle bad news is to turn it into good news. If the unemployment numbers are not expected to get much better until 2012 then why keep throwing yourself at trying to find a new job in those three years when you can use that time to prepare yourself for an improved job market in 2012?
Getting an accelerated four year degree takes about three years. For three years you will be out of the job market while you are in school and, when you graduate, you will be more prepared for the improved economy and job market.

Train While You Work
Hey all. Once again I’m here to give you all the latest news about some great careers.
Yahoo came out with this article just the other day all about jobs where you learn while you work. Check out the article here. These jobs are great because they can lead you into real careers with great salaries but they start with a minimal amount of training and school. In the Yahoo article, they talk about Firefighters, Air Traffic Controllers, Production Managers and Paralegals as great, train-while-you-work jobs, but I think they missed a few. Medical Assistants, Administrative Assistants, and Teaching Assistants all train while they work too.
These are very cool jobs for people who are looking to move into a new career because you can start at the bottom with minimal training and move up the ladder very quickly as you learn new skills.

Is Now the Time for a New Education?
Hello everyone! Let’s get right into it shall we? Today’s article is in response to something I keep seeing over and over on our site.
Everyone knows that times are hard and that there aren’t a lot of jobs out there for anyone so why spend money on a new degree when there aren’t any jobs?
The answer is that an education is actually a great investment right now.
The Bureau of Labor statistics puts the February 2009 unemployment rate for high school dropouts at 12.6%, 8.3% for high school graduates and the unemployment for college graduates is half of that at 4.1%. For every level of education, you are gaining a 4% better chance in the job market.
It’s also important to note that your new career will not be in the current job market. You will emerge into a job market a year, two years or four years down the road. The economy can only do two things in that time; get better or get worse. In an improved economy, people who have spent the last few years educating themselves will have weathered the storm of the financial downturn and will come out improved and with better prospects ahead. In an economy that worsens over the next few years, the newly educated will find themselves with better and more marketable skills to better their chances in a changing world.
In a changing world it is those who change and adapt who succeed. Stock markets rise and fall, unemployment soars and shrinks but the one thing that remains constant, the one thing you always have is yourself. If you are going to invest in anything right now, invest in yourself.

The article is a series of accounts of people who lost their jobs because of the recession. These people didn’t let a little economic downturn slow them down though. They took their lemons and made lemonade by turning their unemployment into new careers—usually dream careers that they had always wanted. The article talks about a woman who was accepted into nursing school the same week that she was laid off and a car salesman who is working his way up the ladder in government after being laid off and another woman who, after being laid off used her newly found time to write a book. All of these people have found that the recession gave them a chance to switch paths back to where they always wanted to be.
The article really reiterates the idea we’ve seen before: that the recession is the perfect time to start training for a new career. Just like the people in the article, there are many people out there who are in a position to change their lives through a new education and the recession is opening doors for people to make that change.

Pharmacist a Top Job for Women
Here’s something interesting from today’s news for everyone out there.
Yahoo came out today with this article about the top paying jobs for women and a surprise leader came out on top: Pharmacy. According to the article, “Women pharmacists earn a median wage of $1,647 per week or about $86,000 a year. Women currently account for slightly less than half of all pharmacists in the U.S. and earn about 85% as much as their male colleagues.”
Not only is Pharmacy a high paying job but it is one of the few career paths where women are getting the equal pay they deserve. This is great news because, while working on a Pharmacology Degree can take up to eight years, many people start as Pharmacy Technicians by earning a certificate or Associate's Degree in Pharmacy Practice while they work and train in pharmacies.
